The history of the WARN M8274 winch
Written: March 02, 2011
by Andy Lilienthal
The WARN M8274 is probably the best-known and most recognized winch Warn Industries makes. Introduced in 1974, it replaced the original Belleview winch that was made from 1959-1973.
The M8274 has remained basically unchanged since '74, with only minor tweaks including upgraded electrics throughout the years, and a few cosmetic revisions. In 1998, to celebrate Warn Industries' 50th anniversary, the name was changed to M8274-50, and there were some slight cosmetic changes. In 2008, to celebrate the company's 60th anniversary, a limited-edition M8274-60 was offered, each individually numbered, equipped with synthetic rope, painted black, and shipped in a special wooden crate.

By the way, have you ever wondered what M8274 stood for? The M stands for "model," 8 is for its 8,000 lb. capacity, 2 is for "two-way" (freespool and power-in), and 74 is the year it was introduced.

Identifying early M8274s
Since the M8274 has been around for nearly 40 years, there are quite a few of them out there, many still performing regular recovery duty. We get a fair amount of requests to identify how old a specific M8274 is. Here's a way to identify them up until about the early 1990s.

  • On the top of the upper housing there will be a code with two letters and a number. For example, we'll use FB6.

  • The first letter stands for the month the winch was made (A=1, B=2, C=3, etc.). Therefore, with our example, F would equal the sixth month: June

  • The second letter stands for the working day of the month, not including Saturdays or Sundays. Our example says "B," which would be the second working day of the month.

  • The ending number represents the year the winch was made during the '70s or '80s. In this example, it's 6, so that'd be '76 or '86. (Remember, M8274 production started in '74 and this coding system stopped in the early 1990s, after that, Warn used serial numbers.) Beginning in about 1980, Warn switched from a metal socket on the control pack to a plastic socket. So, depending on which one your winch has would determine which year your M8274 was manufactured.

  • So an M8274 with the code FB6 and a metal socket on the control box would've been made in June of 1976 on the second working day of the month.

A big thanks to the WARN Customer Service team for the information on decoding the older models. Here are a few photos of M8274s through the years.

I have a '78 vintage 8274 on my D-90. All it took to bring it back to life was a new motor, and a little paint so it would look as good as new.

I won a 8274 winch in 1980 at a 4X4 rally. It is still on my 1951 flat fender Willy's. date code A09 With a Prestolite 12V motor pn # MBL 4401.... Last month at a swap meet I bought a basket case 8274 with a WARN motor pn # MRV-B-4 (12-86)... I want to put the motor with the most horse power into my winch.
QUESTION: Which motor has the most horse power?
Or when did you switch to the biggger motors.
I have used this for 31 years and it is the best..
    Thanks Jim

    Jim,

One of our resident 8274 experts, Steve Schoenfelder, said:

The Prestolite motor was rated at 2.1 HP. The Bosch motor (MRV-B-4) appeared around 1987 and was rated 2.5hp. The Bosch motor has a splined armature shaft, where as the Prestolite motor has a keyed armature shaft. To convert to the Bosch motor the splined pinion gear part number 15879 is required. The winch just bought should have this pinion gear.

Now the fun part, if the Bosch motor has been used hard, (it’s on a basket case winch) even though it is rated higher for HP, it may be on its last legs and not perform as well as the original Prestolite motor. The only way to tell which would perform better would be to test both motors on the winch to see which runs best.

I now have my dads old work truck and it has this winch that he has used for years and its still strong enough to pull me and my buddies out of the mud and ruts when we get stuck. I even used it to finish pulling down an old barn that had been partially knocked over by a tree. This thing is still strong as can be and I love it. So I have to say thank you WARN.

I would like to know if you can still get parts for the belleview winch? Father in law has one said that I could mount on my F150. It seams to work fine has not been used in about 20 years. Do you think it is worth messing with? It only has one solenoid is that correct. Thank You, Ted Dukes

    Ted,

We do not offer parts for the Belleview winches anymore. However, give the folks at the 4 Wheel Drive Center of Minnesota. They do a lot with the older WARN winches.

I have a 8274 (DA5) on a c20 chev. A friend borrowed the pickup and it returned winch not working. The spool had been pulled into itself so tight, I had to hook to a tree to pull the hook free. I try to operate winch (in or out), a click in the solenoids is all I hear. Tried to hook up jumper cables from battery to motor... nothing. What to do?

    Justing,

We're sure it is an 8274 by the serial number. For a few years we supplied these directly to Jeep and they were installed onto Jeeps possibly at the factory. The ID tag said Jeep on it. We can’t tell how old the winch is by the serial number, but there should be a 3 digit date code on the winch.

Thanks or the Info! I just decoded my working $100 8274. Built on Nov. 12th 1978. I picked it up few years ago Used it once worked an got me out of a pretty hairy steep hill exit. Seemed a little extra slow but IT WORKED ! I would like to do a full run through of seals solenoids grease an oil. Is there a full kit with bearings/seals/o rings/ball bearings? I also noticed a few times the metal plug area had to be wiggled for contact. Is there a new sol.plug package i can buy as a unit complete? Any help would be Great Thanks again WARN !

This was not used very much, but purchased in 1978.

I recently purchased a warn winch and cannot read the model #. The serial # is 140670 and the date code is HW9. Is this an m8274 8000 lb winch or is this something else? It looks like a m8274 just not sure any insight would be great?

James, I'd call our Customer Service number (800-543-9276). They'll help you out.

Jason, they did change the way the serial numbers were done later on, so it's very possible you still have an M8274.
