Soaring gas prices has made the need for better fuel economy a top priority in the auto
industry. The growing number of trucks and SUVs with four-wheel-drive systems has made
this quest even more challenging. To maximize the fuel economy of these vehicles, various
forms of disconnect systems have been developed to provide a two-wheel-drive mode that
minimizes the number of rotating components when four-wheel-drive is not needed.
Warn Industries' engineers Oliver Heravi and Mark Fogelberg presented a technical paper,
titled "Methodology to Predict Fuel Economy Benefits of Secondary Axle Disconnects on
Four-Wheel-Drive Vehicles/All-Wheel Drive Vehicles," at the 2005 SAE World Congress &
Exposition. The study examines the effects of secondary driveline disconnect systems
on fuel economy.
